CrossFit Brand Backpacks Compared: Capacity, Features, and What Fits a Competition Kit

Picsil, 2POOD, Bear KompleX and Reyllen backpacks compared by capacity and features, with the 45L options that hold a full competition kit.

IronBackpack Pro 45L alongside CrossFit brand backpacks compared by capacity

CrossFit gear brands make backpacks from 24 to 50 litres. 2POOD's Performance 3.0 is 24L, Reyllen's Venture is 35L, Picsil's Maverick is 40L and Bear KompleX's tactical pack is 50L. For a full competition loadout — two pairs of shoes, a belt, sleeves, wraps, a rope and a change of clothes — 40 litres and up is the working range.

Most CrossFit apparel and equipment brands eventually make a backpack. The results vary more than you would expect, mostly in one dimension: how much they hold.

Here is the field, sorted by capacity.

The range

Brand Model Volume Notable features
2POOD Performance Backpack 3.0 24 L Velcro panel with quick-attach loops, dual bottle holders, padded valuables pocket, laptop sleeve, mesh admin pocket, shoe compartment
Reyllen Venture 35 L Duffle-style opening, EVA foam back panel doubling as laptop compartment, reinforced corner handles
Picsil Maverick 40L (2nd gen) 40 L Waterproof fabric, thermal pocket, USB charging port, separate dirty-clothes and shoe pocket, laptop and tablet compartment
Bear KompleX Military Grade Tactical 50 L 1000D nylon, water-repellent coating, MOLLE webbing, compression straps, multiple compartments

What the capacity numbers mean in practice

A competition day loadout is heavier than a training day. Working from published shoe volumes and common kit:

  • Two pairs of shoes (lifters plus metcons, US men's 10): roughly 16–20 litres
  • 10mm lever belt: does not fold, roughly 4–6 litres if carried inside
  • Knee sleeves, wrist wraps, grips, tape: 3–5 litres
  • Jump rope, chalk, nutrition: 2–3 litres
  • Change of clothes and a towel: 6–8 litres

That is 31–42 litres before a laptop, a water bottle or a jacket.

Which is why the 24L pack in the list above is a training-day bag, not a competition bag — and 2POOD would probably say the same.

Brand by brand

2POOD Performance Backpack 3.0 — 24 L

The best-organised small pack in this group. A Velcro panel with quick-attachment loops, dual water bottle holders, a padded front pocket for valuables, a laptop sleeve, a mesh admin pocket and a shoe compartment — in 24 litres. That is a lot of structure in a small bag, and 2POOD clearly designed it rather than ordering a stock pack.

Right size for: a training session where you drive to the gym and back.

Reyllen Venture — 35 L

A duffle-style wide-mouth opening rather than a top-loading tube, an EVA foam back panel that doubles as a padded laptop compartment, and reinforced corner handles. Reyllen has real credibility in functional fitness and the design shows someone thought about how a gym bag actually gets used.

Right size for: most training days and a lean competition kit.

Picsil Maverick 40L — 40 L

The most feature-dense pack here. Waterproof fabric, a thermal pocket, a USB charging port, a separate compartment for dirty clothes and shoes, and space for both a laptop and a tablet. Picsil is a Spanish brand with strong grip and apparel lines, and the Maverick is a serious attempt at a do-everything pack.

Right size for: competition days and travel.

Bear KompleX Military Grade Tactical — 50 L

The largest in the group and the most tactical in construction: 1000D nylon with a water-repellent coating, MOLLE webbing, compression straps and multiple compartments. At 50 litres it is arguably past the point of comfortable daily carry, but it will hold everything.

Right size for: multi-day competition trips, or if you genuinely over-pack.

Where 45 litres sits

Forty-five litres is the size most purpose-built gym packs land on, and the numbers above explain why: it clears a full competition loadout with room for a laptop and a bottle, without becoming a bag you resent carrying.

What to do with this

  1. Count your kit before you pick a size. Two pairs of shoes alone is 16–20 litres. If you compete, anything under 40 is going to be tight.
  2. Check whether the brand publishes a laptop size. Several do not. If you carry a 16" machine, an unpublished "laptop sleeve" is not a specification you can rely on.
  3. Check whether the brand publishes a defect warranty. Most in this list do not. Of fifteen packs compared, three publish a lifetime warranty.

FAQ

What size backpack do I need for a CrossFit competition?

A full competition loadout — two pairs of shoes, a lifting belt, knee sleeves, wraps, grips, a rope, nutrition and a change of clothes — comes to roughly 31–42 litres before a laptop or water bottle. Most athletes find 40 litres the practical minimum and 45 litres comfortable.

How many litres is the Picsil Maverick backpack?

The Picsil Maverick 40L second-generation tactical backpack holds 40 litres. It includes waterproof fabric, a thermal pocket, a USB charging port, a separate compartment for dirty clothes and shoes, and space for a laptop and tablet.

How big is the 2POOD Performance Backpack 3.0?

The 2POOD Performance Backpack 3.0 holds 24 litres. Despite the size it is well organised, with a Velcro panel and quick-attachment loops, dual water bottle holders, a padded valuables pocket, a laptop sleeve, a mesh admin pocket and a shoe compartment.

Which CrossFit brand makes the biggest backpack?

Of the brands in this comparison, Bear KompleX makes the largest at 50 litres — a military-grade tactical pack in 1000D nylon with MOLLE webbing and compression straps. Picsil's Maverick is next at 40 litres, followed by Reyllen's Venture at 35 litres.

Do I need a 45L backpack for the gym?

Not for a normal training session. A 21–25 litre pack handles shoes, a shirt and a shaker. Forty-five litres becomes useful when you carry two pairs of shoes, a lifting belt that does not fold, sleeves and wraps, a change of clothes, and a laptop for the commute in.

Which gym backpacks have a lifetime warranty?

Of fifteen gym and tactical packs compared, three publish a lifetime warranty: the IronBackpack Pro 45L at $99.95, the WOLFpak 45L from $177.95, and the GORUCK GR1 at $397 with its SCARS guarantee. HolStrength publishes 90 days. Most other brands publish no defect warranty.
