Quick answer: The best gym duffel bag for most people is 40L to 60L with a separate pocket for shoes or wet kit. On a budget, the Under Armour Undeniable 5.0 ($45, 40L, vented pocket) or Nike Brasilia 9.5 ($47, 60L) cover it. If you also carry it on your back, pick one with backpack straps, such as the IronBackpack 50L Training Duffle ($149.95).

A duffel is the classic gym bag: one wide opening, carried by hand or over a shoulder. In the UK it is called a holdall. Same bag, same job. The difference between a good one and a bad one is where the dirty shoes go and whether your shoulder survives the walk from the car park.

We make one of the duffels below. Every spec comes from the brand or an authorized retailer, checked in October 2026.

How to choose a gym duffel

1. Size it to your locker and your kit

Duffel size Fits Watch out for
20L to 30L One pair of shoes, towel, shirt, bottle No room for a belt or a second pair
40L to 50L Shoes, clothes, belt, sleeves, toiletries Long duffels may not fit a 12"-wide locker
60L and up Two pairs of shoes, foam roller, team kit Heavy on one shoulder when full

A common double-tier gym locker compartment is 12" wide, 15" deep and 30" high. A 21" to 22" duffel goes in upright. A 29" duffel like ours does not fit a half locker unless it is half empty. Measure your gym's lockers before you buy long.

2. Decide where the shoes go

Three options, in order of how well they keep clean clothes clean:

  • A separate shoe compartment with its own zipper.
  • A vented pocket, which lets moisture out but shares a wall with the main space.
  • A shoe bag inside the main compartment. Works in any duffel. Washable, which a sewn-in pocket is not.

For the full breakdown, read gym bag with wet/dry compartment.

3. Check the carry

A full duffel with shoes, a belt and clothes is heavy, and on one shoulder strap the whole load sits on one side of your body. If the walk from car or train to the gym is longer than a few minutes, backpack straps are worth paying for.

Hidden padded backpack straps zip away when you want a plain duffel. Best for: a long walk from the car with a full lifting kit.

Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 40L — $165

Where our duffle loses

  • Length. At 29", it is too long for most carry-on limits and for a half locker when full.
  • Price. Three duffels here cost under $50.
  • No vented shoe pocket. The shoe compartment is closed. Take shoes out to dry at home.
  • Weight. MOLLE webbing, panels and backpack straps add weight a plain polyester duffel does not carry.

Duffel or backpack?

If you drive, a duffel is faster to load. If you walk, ride or go to work after training, a backpack carries better. A duffel with hidden backpack straps covers both, at the cost of weight. FAQ

What is the best gym duffel bag?

For most people, a 40 to 60 liter duffel with a separate place for shoes or wet kit. The Under Armour Undeniable 5.0 at $45 has a vented shoe pocket, and the Nike Brasilia 9.5 gives 60 liters for $47. If you also want to carry it as a backpack, the IronBackpack 50L Training Duffle at $149.95 has hidden straps.

What is a gym holdall?

A holdall is the British name for a duffel bag: a soft bag with one wide zippered opening, carry handles and usually a shoulder strap. A gym holdall is the same thing sized for training kit. When people search for the best gym holdall, they are comparing the same bags Americans call gym duffels.

What size duffel bag is good for the gym?

40 to 50 liters fits shoes, clothes, a towel, a lifting belt and sleeves. 20 to 30 liters fits one pair of shoes and a change of clothes only. 60 liters and up suits two pairs of shoes or team kit. Check your locker too: a common compartment is 12 inches wide and 30 inches high.

Do gym duffel bags fit in lockers?

Many do, if you check length against the locker. A common double-tier compartment measures 12 by 15 by 30 inches, so a 21 to 22 inch duffel stands upright inside. A 29 inch duffel only fits when it is partly empty. Gyms vary, so measure the locker before buying a long duffel.

Is a duffel bag or a backpack better for the gym?

A duffel is better if you drive and want one wide opening for bulky kit. A backpack is better if you walk, cycle or go to work after training, because it sits on both shoulders. Duffels with backpack straps, like the IronBackpack 50L or Patagonia Black Hole, do both but weigh more.

Can a gym duffel bag be a carry-on?

Some can. The Patagonia Black Hole 40L at 19.7 by 12.5 by 8.5 inches fits the common 22 by 14 by 9 inch limit. The IronBackpack 50L at 29 inches long does not. Soft duffels compress, but airlines measure length, width and depth, so check your carrier before you fly.
