Quick answer: Most people need a 30L to 45L gym bag. 20L fits shoes, a towel and a bottle. 30L adds a change of clothes or a laptop. 40L to 45L carries a full lifting or CrossFit kit with two pairs of shoes and a belt, plus a laptop. Go bigger than 50L only for team kit or bulky gear like a foam roller.
In this guide:
"Medium size gym bag" means nothing until you put a number on it. Brands measure in liters, people think in shoes and towels, and nobody tells you how one turns into the other.
This guide does that. First the conversion, then what each size holds, then the two limits that cap how big a gym bag should get: the locker and the airline.

Liters, in plain terms
One liter is 1,000 cubic centimeters, or about 61 cubic inches. A 1-liter water bottle is a good mental unit. A 30L bag holds about thirty of them, if they were square.
How to estimate a bag's volume from its dimensions
- Measure the bag in inches. Height × width × depth, at the widest points.
- Multiply them. That gives cubic inches.
- Divide by 61. That gives liters.
- Take off about 10% to 20%. Rounded corners, padding and pockets mean a bag holds less than its outer box.
Example: the IronBackpack Pro 45L measures 20" × 12" × 12". That is 2,880 cubic inches, or about 47 liters as a box. Rated capacity: 45L.
What each size actually holds
| Size | Holds | Typical bag | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15L–20L | One pair of shoes, towel, shirt, bottle | Small duffel, drawstring, daypack | Short sessions, gym near home |
| 25L–30L | Above + full change of clothes, or a 15" laptop | Mid-size backpack or duffel | General training, light commute |
| 35L–40L | Above + belt, sleeves, toiletries | Large backpack or duffel | Lifters, gym before work |
| 45L | Two pairs of shoes, belt, sleeves, wraps, clothes, food, 17" laptop | Lifting or tactical backpack | Full kit plus work, competition days |
| 50L–60L | Above + bulky items, team kit | Large duffel | Drivers, team sports, weekend trips |
| 60L+ | Gear for several days | Travel duffel | Travel, not daily gym |
The item-by-item math
| Item | Volume |
|---|---|
| One pair US men's size 10 training shoes | ~8–10 L |
| Second pair (lifters or metcons) | ~8–10 L |
| 10mm lever belt (does not fold) | ~4–6 L |
| Knee sleeves, wrist wraps, grips, tape | ~3–5 L |
| Jump rope, chalk, nutrition | ~2–3 L |
| Change of clothes and towel | ~6–8 L |

Add up your fullest day, not your average one. A bag that fits Monday and fails on Saturday is the wrong size.

Is a 30L gym backpack enough?
For a lot of people, yes. 30L carries one pair of shoes, a change of clothes, a towel, a bottle and a 15" laptop. It runs out when you add any of these:
- A second pair of shoes.
- A lever belt that does not fold.
- A 16" or 17" laptop.
- A meal prep container or two.
- A full work outfit, including shoes.
Two of those and you are in 40L to 45L territory. That gap is why we built a 45L, and why most lifting backpacks are that size. See best backpack for weightlifting.
Too big is also a problem
A bigger bag is not free.
- Weight. More fabric, more weight before you put anything in.
- Locker fit. A common double-tier locker compartment is 12" wide, 15" deep and 30" high. A 29" duffel only fits partly empty.
- Carry-on. The common US carry-on limit is 22" × 14" × 9". That box is about 45L, but most 45L backpacks are deeper than 9". Ours is 12".
- Empty space. A half-empty big bag lets gear slide around.

Gym bag size for men and women
Size depends on the kit, not the person. Shoe size changes the numbers more than anything else: a men's US 13 lifting shoe takes more room than a women's US 7 trainer. If you wear a large size, check the depth of the shoe compartment and add a few liters. For gender-specific picks, see best gym backpack for men and best gym backpack for women.
FAQ
What size gym bag do I need?
Count your fullest day. Shoes, a towel and a bottle need 15 to 20 liters. Add a change of clothes or a laptop and you need 25 to 30. A full lifting or CrossFit kit with two pairs of shoes, a belt and sleeves needs 31 to 42 liters before a laptop, so a 40 to 45 liter bag covers it.
What is a medium size gym bag in liters?
There is no official standard, but most brands call 30 to 40 liters medium. That size fits one pair of shoes, a change of clothes, a towel, a bottle and a laptop or toiletry bag. Small usually means 15 to 25 liters, and large means 45 liters or more.
Is a 30L backpack big enough for the gym?
For a light kit, yes: one pair of shoes, a change of clothes, a towel, a bottle and a 15 inch laptop. It runs short when you add a second pair of shoes, a lever belt, a 17 inch laptop, food containers or a full work outfit. Two of those usually push you to 40 to 45 liters.
How do I measure the liters of a bag?
Multiply height, width and depth in inches, then divide by 61 to get liters. Take off 10 to 20 percent, because rounded corners, padding and pockets mean the bag holds less than its outer box. A bag measuring 20 by 12 by 12 inches works out to about 47 liters as a box.
Is a 45L gym bag too big?
Not if you fill it. 45 liters carries two pairs of shoes, a belt, sleeves, clothes, food and a 17 inch laptop, which is a normal day for lifters who train around work. If your kit is one pair of shoes and a towel, a 45 liter bag is extra weight and empty space.
What size gym bag fits in a locker?
Measure your gym's lockers, because they vary. A common double-tier compartment is 12 inches wide, 15 inches deep and 30 inches high. Bags up to about 22 inches long stand upright inside. A 20 by 12 by 12 inch backpack goes in, though 12 inches wide is a tight fit; a 29 inch duffel only fits when partly empty.
