Quick answer: A tactical backpack with velcro for patches has a panel of soft loop fabric sewn to the outside. Patches carry the rough hook side on their back. Press a patch onto the panel and it grips. Peel from a corner and it releases. Any patch with a hook backing fits, so you can swap flags, gym patches or custom designs in seconds.
In this guide:
"Velcro" is a brand name. The generic term is hook-and-loop, and that is what most packs use. The idea is the same. This guide covers how the panel works, which patches fit, and how to make a tactical backpack yours.

Hook and loop: which side is which
There are two halves, and they only work as a pair.
| Side | Feel | Where it sits |
|---|---|---|
| Loop | Soft, fuzzy | On the backpack panel |
| Hook | Rough, scratchy | On the back of the patch |
The soft side goes on the bag because it does not snag clothes. That is why a patch needs a panel. Plain fabric gives the hooks nothing to grab.
Patch panel vs MOLLE webbing
People mix these up. They do different jobs.
- A patch panel holds flat patches. It is for identity. It is not built to carry weight.
- MOLLE webbing holds pouches. It is for storage. Straps weave through the rows and snap shut.
A pack with both lets you change how it looks and how much it carries. For the webbing side, read MOLLE explained.
Types of patches that fit
The backing matters more than the front. If the back is hook, it fits.
| Patch type | How it is made | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Embroidered | Thread stitched onto a fabric base | Classic look. Fine detail can blur on small text |
| PVC or rubber | Molded soft plastic | Sharp edges and color. Wipes clean. Handles sweat and rain |
| Woven | Thin threads woven flat | Holds small lettering better than embroidery |
| Printed | Design printed on fabric | Photo-level detail. The print can fade with wear |
Patches sold as "iron-on" or "sew-on" have a plain back. They will not hold on a loop panel until you add a hook backing.

How to put your own patch on a tactical backpack
- Check the back. If it is rough hook material, go to step 4. If it is plain fabric, do steps 2 and 3.
- Cut a piece of hook tape. Buy sew-on hook tape. Cut it to the shape of the patch, a little smaller than the edge.
- Sew it on. Stitch the hook tape to the back of the patch around the edge. Stitching holds better than glue through heat and washing.
- Clean the panel. Brush lint and chalk off the loop panel on the pack.
- Press from the center out. Lay the patch on the panel and press the whole surface down, edges included.
Ordering a custom patch
A custom tactical backpack usually starts with one custom patch: a gym logo, a team name, a call sign. Before you order:
- Ask for hook backing. Most patch makers offer it as an option. It saves you the sewing.
- Measure your panel first. A patch larger than the panel hangs over the edge and peels. Measure the loop area on your pack and order smaller than that.
- Keep text large. Small lettering fills in on embroidered patches. Use PVC or woven for fine detail.
- Pick PVC for gym use. It wipes clean and does not hold sweat.

How to keep the grip strong
Hook-and-loop wears out when the hooks fill with lint. Three habits fix that.
- Brush the back of the patch with a stiff brush or pick lint out with a pin.
- Brush the loop panel on the pack when it looks matted.
- Take patches off before you wash the pack, and let the panel dry fully before you press them back on.

FAQ
What kind of patches stick to a tactical backpack?
Any patch with a hook backing sticks to the loop panel on a tactical backpack. That includes embroidered, PVC, woven and printed patches. Patches with a plain, sew-on or iron-on back will not grip until you sew a piece of hook tape to the back.
Can I put my own patches on a tactical backpack?
Yes. If your patch already has a hook backing, press it onto the loop panel. If it has a plain back, sew a piece of hook tape to it first. Measure the panel on your pack before you buy or order, so the patch sits inside the loop area.
Is velcro the same as hook-and-loop?
Velcro is a brand name for a hook-and-loop fastener. Hook-and-loop is the generic term for the same kind of two-part fastener: one side with small hooks, one side with soft loops. Most tactical backpacks describe their patch area as a hook-and-loop panel or a loop field.
Do velcro patches fall off backpacks?
A patch pressed flat onto a clean loop panel holds through normal carry. Grip drops when lint, chalk or dirt fills the hooks, or when the patch is larger than the panel and an edge hangs free. Brush both sides clean and keep the patch inside the loop area.
Can I add a velcro panel to a backpack that does not have one?
You can sew a piece of loop fabric onto a flat area of the pack. It works for patches. Stitch it around the full edge so it does not peel. If you want webbing for pouches too, buy a pack that has both built in, since webbing must be sewn to hold weight.
