Tactical Gym Backpack: Does It Make Sense?

A tactical gym backpack is a tactical-style pack used as a gym bag. It makes sense when your training load is large: lifting shoes, a belt, wraps, a change of clothes, food and a laptop. The build gives you tough fabric, separate compartments and a flat opening. For a towel and a bottle, it is too much bag.

What tactical adds to a gym bag

Tactical is a build, not a look. Four things carry over to training:

  • Heavy fabric. 900D water-resistant, rip-proof polyester takes concrete floors, lockers and car trunks.
  • Compartments. Five on the Pro 45L, so used gear stays off clean gear.
  • A clamshell opening. The pack opens flat to 180°. You see everything at once.
  • MOLLE webbing and a patch panel. Add a pouch for small items. Swap a patch to mark the bag as yours.

When it fits

  • You lift, and your kit includes shoes, a belt, sleeves and wraps.
  • You train before or after work and carry a laptop.
  • You carry food for the day.
  • You travel to compete and want one bag for the trip.

When it does not

  • You carry a towel, a bottle and headphones. A 20L daypack is lighter and cheaper.
  • You need a bag that fits a narrow locker when full. The Pro 45L is 20" × 12" × 12".
  • You want a sewn-in, vented shoe pocket. The Pro 45L does not have one. Shoes go in a main compartment inside a shoe bag. The Duffle 50L has a built-in shoe compartment.

FAQ

Is a tactical backpack good for the gym?

Yes, if you carry a full kit. A tactical backpack gives you heavy fabric, several compartments and an opening that lays flat. That suits lifting shoes, a belt, clothes, food and a laptop. If you carry a towel and a bottle, a small daypack does the job for less.

What size tactical backpack do I need for the gym?

Count your load. Shoes, a towel and a bottle fit in 20 to 25L. A belt, wraps and a change of clothes take you to about 30L. Add a laptop and food and you need 40L or more. The IronBackpack Pro 45L is sized for that last case.

Does a tactical gym backpack look too military?

It depends on the color and what you attach. In Black, with the patches off, the Pro 45L reads as a large plain backpack. Green and Khaki lean further into the tactical look. The webbing is visible on every color, so it never looks like a slim office bag.

Where do shoes go in a tactical gym backpack?

In the Pro 45L, shoes go in one of the two main compartments, inside a water-repellent shoe bag. The pack has no vented, isolated shoe pouch. If you want a sewn-in shoe compartment, the Duffle 50L has one that fits up to men's US size 14.

Can I carry a laptop in a tactical gym backpack?

In the Pro 45L, yes. A padded compartment fits laptops up to 17 inches and sits apart from the main gear compartments. Bottles and shakers ride in the two side holders outside the pack, so liquid stays away from the device.
